Summer Academics & Leadership Programs
There are many academic programs offered throughout the United States and world through both public and private entities. We have included the following programs due to their affordability (many are free), location, and because many LHS students have attended in the past. Your friendly LHS School Counselor would be happy to help you explore options beyond what is listed below.
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING SUMMER HIGH SCHOOL INSTITUTE
Since 1985, Wyoming's rising junior students have had the opportunity to have their first taste of college life while attending the UW Summer High School Institute. HSI was created to provide an extra opportunity to learn, grow, and mature as young adults. The Program's philosophy attempts to develop the whole person rather than concentrating on academics exclusively.
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING ENGINEERING SUMMER PROGRAM
You'll work one-on-one with faculty members and advanced students. This one-week program will expand your horizons, develop creative thinking and problem-solving skills and challenge your imagination. Students who are interested in any career are encouraged to apply. The field of engineering can prepare you for advanced degrees and careers in medicine, law, business, as well as the various fields in engineering. Hosted on the UW campus, you'll be in some of the best labs in the West. Only 36 students will be selected to participate in the program.
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING NATIVE AMERICAN SUMMER INSTITUTE
The Native American Summer Institute is a 6 day residential summer pre-college program designed to familiarize Native American High School Students (current 9th-12th grade students) from the Wind River Reservation and surrounding communities to the UW campus and to the town of Laramie. Exposure to a full college experience by staying in the residence halls, attending mock college courses, and participating in activities on and off campus. Build Leadership skills and build new relationships with peers, UW faculty and staff, and current UW Native American college students.
SNOWY RANGE SUMMER DANCE FESTIVAL
The Snowy Range Summer Dance Festival provides professional level training and performance for dancers ages 12 through adult. Dancers study for 10 days with distinguished faculty from around the world and perform work set on them during the culminating Gala Performance.
ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS "RYLA"
RYLA is a leadership training program sponsored by Rotary International that promotes, encourages, and rewards outstanding young people. An all expenses paid six-day conference that brings together a special group of young men and women from Colorado, Wyoming and Western Nebraska to share ideas about becoming better leaders. An action packed program of activities that helps build confidence and leadership skills.
Wyoming Boys' State, held annually in June, is a chance for high school juniors from across the state to participate in a week's worth of activities to gain knowledge of their state and its governmental structure. Delegates learn first-hand how government works, experiencing what it takes to create and enact laws. The week emphasizes leadership, civic engagement and patriotism.
The purpose of American Legion Auxiliary Department of Wyoming Girls State is to provide citizenship training for girls who have completed their junior year of high school; to afford them an opportunity to live together as self-governing citizens; to inform them about the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship, in order that they may understand and participate in the functioning of their government and to help them grasp the meaning of some of the responsibilities which they must assume when they become adults.
WYOMING GAME AND FISH DEPARTMENT YOUTH CAMP
Youth Camps’ top priority is to immerse the campers in exploring potential career opportunities within the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Game wardens, biologists, and other agency personnel will showcase aspects of their positions, inspiring a desire to work outdoors within our campers. Additionally, participants will enjoy hands-on experiences with animal identification, watersports, scientific research, archery, and much more.
